“Een zinnenprikkelende film want je kunt de passie en liefde van de wijnmakers voor hun druiven en wijn voelen, proeven en ruiken. Thumbs up for Kissed by the Grape!
It’s a must see for every wine lover and every wine professional. Hardly ever before did I see such a wonderful documentary on wine as  Kissed by he Grape, subtitled  The Story behind Organic Wine. This documentary pays a tribute to organic grape growing and the people who are convinced that this is the best way to produce great wines. It was made by film maker Fred van Dijk and was based on an initiative by his son in law Derrick Neleman. Neleman has been a strong advocate for organic wines for years and runs the specialized wine import company Lovian.

The main characters are famous wine producers like Miguel Torres from Spain, Alvaro Espinoza from Chile and the Italian brothers Natalino and Amadio Fasoli. Intriguingly enough, those winemakers represent three different approaches of organic grape growing. The Fasoli brothers simply follow their farmer’s wisdom without belonging to any specific movement, Espinoza is totally into  bio dynamics and goes to the extreme, where as Torres is the rational businessman.

The documentary was superbly filmed in vineyards in Italy, Spain and Chile. Although France, the world’s most important country for organic winegrowing, is missing, Kissed by the Grapes gives you an excellent insight. What I especially liked is the positive tone of the documentary. As one of the point out, organic winegrowing is not about claiming to be morally superior, but about convincing people by offering them wonderful wines.  Just compare this to the extremely negative Mondovino, a documentary that allegedly tried to make a point in favour of ‘true’ wine producers. No one in Kissed by the Grape preaches or condemns producers who don’t apply organic techniques. Everyone just tries to explain why they work the way they do. It should also be pointed out that the stories make you smile or even laugh from time to time. A better promotion for organic wines is hard to imagine.

Probably the most fascinating of the portrayed producers is Miguel Torres as he represents ‘the next generation’ in organics. Curiously enough, he speaks Spanish when filmed in Catalonia, English when in Chile. Minor detail. Torres’ motivation to opt for organic grape growing is closely related to his concerns that the climate is warming up. Hence, his company’s huge investments in a sustainable wine production are as much business driven as idealistic. For Torres it’s an inevitable necessity. However, you have to be a visionary to be ahead of your time. Also quite interesting to hear is how Torres questions certain organic practices that have been taken for granted over he years.

There’s also a role for two Dutchmen. One of them is co producer Derrick Neleman. Despite his enthusiasm for organic wines, he stress the importance of quality. One shouldn’t drink organic wines only because they’re organic but because of their great taste. Spot on! His view is shared by wine writer and marketing expert Harold Hamersma. Organic wines have come of age, and they should be treated as such.
Someone you unfortunately can’t see but only hear is saxophone player Candy Dulfer. She played the music for Kissed by the Grape. It adds to a truly high class production.
Kissed by the Grape is an absolute must buy. It gives you both a good feeling and a lot of information. To be enjoyed without any moderation!

Kissed by the grape.

Ellen Dekkers

Kissed by the Grape is a fascinating ‘behind the scenes’ of the pioneers of organic and biodynamic wines in the world. It is both informative and entertaining and is a ‘must see’ for any wine lover..”
